Built in 1767, the Chowan County Courthouse served as a Whig center during the Revolutionary War. It is the nation's best preserved colonial courtroom and finest Georgian courthouse in the South. The beautiful paneled room upstairs has served as public meeting place, ballroom, and as a banquet hall when President Monroe visited Edenton in 1819.

Things of interest around the courthouse green include the East Custom House; a monument to Joseph Hewes, signer of the Declaration of Independence; three Revolutionary War cannons; and the Edenton Tea Party of 1774 Memorial.
